Can a hernia on one side cause a hernia on the other side?

Can a hernia on one side cause a hernia on the other side?
I had an inguinal hernia on my left side from a fall. A few years later, I got one on the other side, probably from heavy lifting. The right one has come back 3 times and now I have nerve damage in my groin from scar tissue from the surgeries. It it possible/probable that my right hernia was caused by or a result of my left hernia? thanks

  1. No, a hernia on one side won't cause a hernia on the other side. However, two hernias may share a common cause (such as heavy lifting).Inguinal hernias are often precipitated by a congenital weakness in the structures affected, and in this case the same weakness that helps a hernia develop on one side may help it to develop on the opposite side. So one hernia doesn't cause another, but whatever causes one may also cause both.
