  1. I just spoke to one of my friends Sunday about that because we both had knee replacements. She had to have the manipulation. She was put to sleep under general anesthesia and had it done. If you don't do the exercises the way they are suppose to be done, it will get stiff. The tendons will become rigid from not being used. It was painful, but I did my exercises evey day, a therapist came to my home and helped with therapy, I also went to water therapy where they bend you knee in the water and do exercises there. That water is like bath water it's so warm. They give you floating devices so can go in the deep part and kick you legs. The more I moved it, the looser it got. Then they made me ride a stationary bike. I also had those machines that automatically bend you knee and you set the control to what you can stand. It takes a lot of work, but I never had to have the manipulation done. In the meantime, tell your mom to put heat on her knee, for about 10-15 min followed with ice for another 15 min. This will help relieve some of the pain and also help loosen up the tight muscles and tendons. I know how she feels that's for sure.
