  1. I just have to comment back to the previous RN who posted. THANK GOD there is a nurse out there who knows to pre-medicate a patient 45minutes prior to painful procedures! I wish you could come train the nurses at my hospital!

  2. You'll need a bottle of sterile saline (perhaps 500mL), sterile gauze (probably 4x4s or whatever is appropriate for the size of the wound) and whatever antibiotic was prescribed. You'll also need tape (use plastic tape, it'll be easier for you to handle). Wash your hands well before and after. The dressing may have dried to the burn area, so before you remove the dressing, soak it with saline to make removal easier. Pour it staight from the bottle. If any part of it sticks during removal, continue to apply saline until it loosens. Buy sterile saline at the pharmacy. Saline can also be used to clean the wound bed. Examine it for signs of infection. It should be 100% red. Use sterile gauze to gently pat the wound dry and apply what was prescribed. Cover with 3 or 4 4x4s (gauze) and apply tape to all 4 sides of the gauze. The tape that's there now isn't on the burn wound. It's on your intact skin. Just remove it, it's no big deal. I would suggest, however, for this first dressing change you take one pain med (what is it???) 45 minutes before you do the dressing change.I enjoy doing wound care. I wish I were there to do this myself. Source(s): I'm a nurse.

  3. What pain meds were you prescribed? It's pretty important to know that since some are much stronger than others. Also, does the bottle say take 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed for pain, if it doesn't than what are the instructions? Do whatever the bottle says. Some people need more pain medication that others for some reason. I always have to take 2 Vicodin when I'm in pain, but others can get away with just 1.Personally, if you were prescribed Vicodin, I would take 1 Vicodin and 1 Acetaminophen (Tylenol). That way you can save the pain meds, and take an Over-the-counter product to help ease the pain. I did this after my tonsillectomy surgery and it helped a lot. 4. If your prescription's for "1 or 2 every X hours as needed," then try one at first. If it's not enough, then take a second. It's okay to stagger them, so long as you remember when you took the second one and wait the proper amount of time before you take any more.Burns are really painful. With only 3 pills left, I think that you should definitely ask your doctor for more. With a burn like that, it's not as if anyone's going to think you're a drug seeker.
