How do I relieve terrible ear pressure when I fly?

How do I relieve terrible ear pressure when I fly?
Hi, I am 18 years old and whenever I fly i get terrible ear pain. I wear "EarPlanes" and I think they help alittle but the pain is still so bad. I guess I have a narrow Eustachian tube, or it has a crimp in it. at least that is what the dr says.

So like i said, i wear the ear planes
I chew gum
i yawn
i drink water so i swallow.

the earplanes are also very unconfortable and cause soreness.

why does nothing help! i need a solution because i fly alot and the pain is terrible.

PLEASE HELP! thanks

  1. Take a Sudafed an hour or two before your flight, then between boarding and putting on your seatbelt, use the Afrin nose spray (put it in with your liquids bag). This works really well! (Chewing gum can't hurt either; it probably assists with this treatment)I have had this type of pain for a while as well. The nose-blow thing actually hurt more, and chewing gum didn't help. Recently it was so bad that my companions noticed my distress and attempted to help with different medications. As such, I have found a solution that allows me to have no pain when I fly. 2. I have 3 children that had to have Eustachian tubes placed in their ears surgically due to chronic ear infections. The doctor recommended that I give them a dose of sudafed & tylenol if needed approx. 1hr before the flight to help with the pain.

  3. close your mouth plug your nose and blow. try to blow out your nose.

  4. Sounds like you're doing everything you can. I usually chew loads of gum (like 4-5 of them) and I only start chewing when the plane is about to take off.

  5. That involves closing your mouth, pinching your nose and then blowing without opening your mouth. When you do this, the air inside your mouth has nowhere to go other than your the Eustachian tube, thus forcing it open and immediately equalizing the air pressure in your inner ear.

  6. I always get the WORST pain when im on a plane too. I usually suck sweets and listen to music or just having something else you can focus on. And bending down while sitting can help too. I know its weird but they hav really helped me. Good Luck. (:

  7. hold your breath, pinch your nose and try to exhale, it will pop your ears.works for me every time.

  8. I hold my nose, close my mouth and blow. It hurts at first but normally relieves the pressure.I don't know if there is possible harm to the ear drum by doing this.
